As a Commercial Photographer, I occasionally get to photograph someone or something that makes me creatively excited.
Photographing the Victoria Family and Commercial Hotel in Leeds was one of those occasions!
A building steeped in history and with such a rich tapestry of materials, it was a Photographers dream.
Built in 1865 opposite the Leeds Town Hall to help with accommodating people coming into the city for the Yorkshire Assizes Court.
The sign which now ordains the outside of the Hotel, was found by workmen in the 1980's and is original victoriana dating back to the 1890's. It was found under boards in it's original position and sent for restoration.
Recently the bar area has had new lighting installed, the chandeliers adding to the whole atmosphere of the main lounge.
Inside the architecture and woodwork is splendid. A joy to capture.
The detailing in the bar is stunning. The lions head in the woodwork.
And the elephant trunks along the bar hold the brass handrail firmly in place.
The styling of the Victoria is enchanting and in keeping with what you'd expect from a public house from 1865.
The venue is dressed so well, everywhere you look there is something else adding to it's character.
It is tactile, warm and welcoming. A true gem!
The recent refurbishment of the washrooms have even paid homage to the history of the hotel, with the wallpaper depicting merriment in the Victorian era.
