Principal Hotel Weddings//Mags and Jamie

Sometimes weddings come along that you know are going to be unique and allow you  to create some fabulous wedding day photographs for the bride and groom. As soon as I met Magdalene and Jamie I just knew that their wedding was going to be something special!

Their wedding took place on a lovely sunny day in September last year at the fabulous York wedding venue, The Principal Hotel. As a recommended wedding photographer at The Principal Hotel, I always know where to get the best photographs on the wedding day.

Magdalene is originally from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and met Jamie during their time at York University back in 2012. When Jamie proposed over cream tea at the Principal in 2017 they just knew that was where the wanted to tie the knot.

First I headed off to capture some photographs of the amazing wedding bouquet with it's vibrant colours and styling from Dutch Nurseries. It looked stunning amongst the backdrop of the historic staircase as did Magdalene's dress when displayed in the same area.

The bridal party used one of the rooms at the hotel to get ready in. And apparently they were there very early in the morning to get themselves sorted. Daniella from Boss Blend Beauty did an amazing job, making sure that all the ladies looked stunning! And Sarah from Elegance & Flair made sure that everyones hair was set in place, including Jamie's.

There is always something special when a father sees his daughter for the first time in her wedding dress. It is special moments like this that you will treasure forever from your wedding day. Knowing the hotel like I do, I knew exactly where to stand to capture this amazing series of emotional wedding day photos.

The Oak Room looked stunning with the blossom trees from Fulford Flowers beautifully framing the aisle. There were also lots of decorations and personal touches around the room which Mag and Jamie had put in place. They represented their likes and interests like Studio Ghibli animation films, succulents and decorative symbols from Chinese culture representing double happiness. It really was a wonderful setting that expressed both of their personalities and culture.

After the ceremony we took advantage of the stunning architecture inside The Principal Hotel before heading out into the gorgeously manicured gardens and fountain area for those stunning wedding day portraits. Magdalene had also expressed an interest in going to York Minster to capture some photographs in front of that too.

I think you will agree that taking a quick trip to York Minster on the wedding day for a few more photographs was well worth it.

As the evening function was about to start Mag and Jamie saw the wedding cake for the very first time and they were blown away! The cake was a work of art and made even better by the fact that it was handmade by Magdalene's sister Elena. It's decoration also focused on succulents with a string of hearts (a type of succulent) trailing down the cake and a Studio Ghibli - Totoro character on the top. The cake itself was mille crepe, so each of the three layers were made up of wafer-thin crepes. Apparently there was a 'cake team' working well into the night before making and assembling the cake!

Before the traditional first dance, Mags and Jamie had some other things planned. After getting announced into the room by Pat their DJ and evening host, Mag wanted to throw her bouquet to the ladies in the room and then it was Jamies turn to remove the garter before tossing that to the gents.

I had the best time with Magdalene and Jamie at their wedding and it was a real honour to capture their first wedding. Thank you so much for having me, for allowing me to share your day and for letting me write a lovely follow up on your day!

Now, as I mentioned at the beginning of this blog, Mags was from Kuala Lumpur and in October they went over to her home for a second wedding. They had a ceremony at their family home and then went onto a reception near by. The photographs below are from that wedding!
